I need to change terminals at Heathrow. Can I transit airside?
Heathrow’s terminals are connected by dedicated buses that transport passengers from one terminal to another airside. If your baggage has been checked through to your final destination, you will not have to pass UK immigration control; the buses are part of the airport’s internal airside transit system.
If your baggage has not been checked through to your final destination, you will have to pass immigration control to re-check your baggage. It is important therefore to check with your airline whether or not your luggage will be checked through. Some passengers require transit visas to transit UK airports. It is also important therefore to check whether or not you require a transit visa and if so, if you are eligible for the transit visa waiver concession. For more information about transit visas and the UK’s transit visa waiver concession, please visit our Airside Transit without Visa Concession page here, and the UKBA website.
A useful guide to changing terminals at Heathrow can be found on the airport’s Flight Connections page, which you can find here (this link will open in a new window). The Flight Connections page will also tell you how much time you should allow to transit between terminals.
Please remember that immigration rules, and therefore also the UK’s transit regulations, are subject to continuous change. It is important therefore that before any travels or purchasing tickets you check the UKBA website for up to date details.
